The capital of Ivory Coast has two capitals which divided into political capital and economic capital.
The Political capital of Ivory Coast is Yamoussoukro, located 220 kilometers north of Abidjan, was the hometown of Félix Houphouët-Boigny the first President after independence. The economic capital is Abidjan. On March 12, 1983, the Ivory Coast capital decided to move to Yamoussoukro, but government agencies and diplomatic missions still stayed in Abidjan.
Abidjan is the richest country in west Africa, the capital of Ivory Coast originally, it is the largest city in the Ivory Coast, and west Africa famous harbor with a population of 1.85 million (In 1985 statistics). The Ivory Coast is an agricultural country. Agricultural products are given the priority with coffee and cocoa, coffee production accounted for Africa’s first, second only to Brazil and Colombia in the third world. Cocoa production since 1974, after more than Nigeria, ranked second in the world. It is not only the Ivory Coast’s political and economic and cultural center, but also the transit port of the goods for neighboring countries.
Abidjan is the French colonists established in 1903, as the Upper Volta to Ivory Coast railway terminus. In 1950, after the project of deep-water port completed, Abidjan have rapid development. Abidjan, the main businesses are the flour, coffee, cocoa, processing and export. Exports from here are banana, cotton, peanuts, rubber, industrial diamond. We have a huge sale of ivory in Abidjan. It is a symbol of history. In the 15th century, European settlers here is the sale of ivory, Ivory Coast, hence the name there are luxury “Europe”, its residents are mostly French. The 750 – room hotel “Ivory Lodgel” is one of the largest hotel on the African continent. Established in 1958 at the university of Abidjan is the highest institution of Ivory Coast. There are research and health, rubber and tropical plants of institute of science and a national library and a museum.
